Dress To Impress Beginner's Guide: How to Play (2026)

Guide
By RBLXGUIDESunday, October 25, 202611 min read

Quick Summary

How a Dress To Impress round works, which server to join, how stars and ranks work, and what to unlock first as a new player.

Dress To Impress is a round-based dress-up game: the game hands everyone a theme, you get six minutes to style an outfit from the items in the Dressing Room, then every player walks the runway and rates everyone else from 1 to 5 stars. The best-rated looks reach the podium, and you earn stars and Cash based on how you did. That loop repeats until you leave. Everything else in this guide (servers, ranks, gamepasses, shops) hangs off it.

A note on sourcing before we start: this guide is built from the Dress To Impress Wiki, our own curated item and code data, and the game's Roblox page. We did not play-test it. Where the wiki is vague or contradicts itself, the text says so.

How a round of Dress To Impress works

A standard round has five stages, and the wiki's Game Mode page describes them in this order:

StageWhat happensHow long
Intermission in the lobbyYou wait in the lobby, and near the end of the countdown the next theme is revealedNot specified on the wiki
DressingEveryone is teleported to the Dressing Room and styles an outfit to the theme6 minutes (360 seconds)
RunwayEach player walks the runway in the order they joined the server, from first to last; you can use walks and posesUntil the last player finishes
VotingOther players give your look 1 to 5 starsPart of the runway stage
ResultsThe top three are shown on the podium, then a leaderboard lists the stars and Cash everyone earnedA short screen before the next intermission

Servers hold up to 13 players, which matches the number on the game's Roblox page. The game's Roblox page lists roughly 11.2 billion visits and 7.67 million favorites.

Two numbers shape every round. The first is the item cap: you can wear at most 18 items at once, or 24 if you own the Increased Item Limit gamepass (129 Robux). The second is the clock. Six minutes sounds generous until you remember that hair, makeup, nails and skin tone all count as part of the outfit.

What "the theme" actually is

A theme is a short phrase such as "Monochrome" or "Pajama Day", and the wiki says the game has well over 790 of them as of July 19, 2026. Our own curated list holds 784 active themes, grouped by letter and by a Decades section, and you can browse them on the themes page. Some themes are loose ("Colorful"), some are strict. Monochrome, for example, tells you to dress only in one color. Reading the exact description matters, and the how to win guide goes deeper on that.

Where you spend your time: the lobby and the Dressing Room

Between rounds you stand in the lobby. It holds the winners' podium and the leaderboards, and its look changes with every season; some versions include an obstacle course and spots to sit and pose for photos. When the countdown ends, the game moves you to the Dressing Room.

The Dressing Room has four areas, according to the wiki:

  • Standard Dressing Room. Every player starts the round here. It contains the free items anyone can wear, and the newest Robux set is usually on display.
  • Lana's Salon. Connected to the standard room, this is where you apply makeup, hairstyles and nails. Lana, the nail tech, runs the nail station.
  • Dressing Booths. The curtained booths hold your personal Closet, your saved outfits and your walk animations. The wiki counts 13 changing rooms in total, 9 in the free section and 3 in the VIP section (its own numbers don't add up, and it doesn't say where the thirteenth is).
  • VIP Dressing Room. Only for players with the VIP Pass. It has its own booths, its own salon and, since Valentine's 2026, a VIP Lounge downstairs.

Your Closet is called Collections now

Anything you unlock by code, Robux purchase, achievement or Cash lives in the Closet, which the game now organizes into Collections: Currency, Robux, Codes, Achievements, plus one collection for each past update. The first version of this system arrived on February 8, 2025 as physical chests in the room, and it became the current Collections list with the Summer 2025 update. If you want to find every item you own, open a booth, not a shelf.

One limit surprises new players: the booths offer 35 save slots for outfits, but the wiki says saved outfits only work in Freeplay Mode, the no-theme, no-timer mode. In a normal round you start from scratch.

Servers: where to play as a beginner

There are five server types, and the game picks the first one for you.

ServerRequirementNotes
CasualNone; new players are sent here first5-minute dressing timer, 13-item cap, no Accessory Adjustment, step-by-step tutorial. Added October 18, 2025
RegularNoneThe standard server since release: 6 minutes, 18 items
Pro3,000 or more starsStarted at 2,000, was changed to 1,500, then raised to 3,000
Master10,000 or more starsAdded March 1, 2025 with the Style Showdown release
VIPVIP PassOpen to permanent and monthly VIP owners, and gifted passes count

The tutorial in the Casual server walks you through changing your skin tone, picking a makeup look, choosing a hairstyle, coloring your nails, selecting an item, and using the edit menu to delete an item. It's short, and it covers the exact buttons you need. Do it once and you're ready for Regular.

One thing the wiki leaves open: the Game Mode page gives 360 seconds and 18 items for the base game, while the Casual page gives 5 minutes and 13. Both can be true, because Casual is the exception, but nothing on the wiki says when the game stops sending you to Casual. Treat its limits as training wheels.

Stars, ranks and titles

The wiki documents no separate experience-level bar. Progression runs on stars, which the game awards at the end of each round according to the votes you received. Stars add up into a rank, and the rank shows as a tag under your name. The wiki lists 14 standard ranks:

RankStars needed
New Model0 to 50
Rising Star50 to 200
Aspiring Model200 to 500
Fashionista500 to 1,000
Glamourista1,000 to 1,500
Fashion Maven1,500 to 3,000
Runway Queen3,000 to 6,000
Trend Setter6,000 to 15,000
Runway Diva15,000 to 25,000
Top Model25,000 to 50,000
Glamour Elite50,000 to 75,000
Fashion Mogul75,000 to 100,000
Supernova100,000 to 150,000
Fashion Goddess150,000 and up

Style Showdown, a separate elimination mode, has its own five ranks (New Contestant to Top Competitor) earned with a different currency, Style Stars.

Six ranks hand out an exclusive item the first time you reach them. They show up in the Achievements collection:

Stars also come from places other than standard rounds: some Baddie Pass tiers pay out stars, and Style Showdown winners get 100. The Baddie Pass is a separate seasonal battle pass with its own progress points (Blue Hearts), and it doesn't replace your rank.

Cash: the money you spend in the Shop

Cash, also called Money, is the main currency. A standard round pays between 0 and 60 Cash, and you can also pick up pink Cash (1 to 3) and gold Cash (15 to 25) lying around the map. You spend it on clothes, pose packs and walk packs in the Shop. Our how to get money guide lists every documented source and what's worth buying, so we won't repeat the numbers here.

Your first hour: a practical order

This sequence comes from the documented mechanics, so treat it as a sensible plan rather than a proven route.

  1. 1Join and finish the Casual tutorial. It's the only guided onboarding the game has.
  2. 2Open Daily Tasks (the Hall of Fame). A new set of tasks arrives every 24 hours, with examples like "play 3 or 4 rounds", "win 1st place" and "pose on the runway 2 or 3 times". Finishing all of them gives a bonus reward; in a Cash season that bonus is 100 to 125 Cash.
  3. 3Claim your Daily Login reward. Introduced on February 7, 2026: day 1 gives 15 Cash and each consecutive day adds 15.
  4. 4Redeem the active codes. The wiki counts 26 active codes, each unlocking a free item. Our codes page has the list.
  5. 5Play rounds until Accessory Adjustment unlocks. The feature lets you move, rotate and scale accessories and hair. It opens after 30 rounds outside Style Showdown, or instantly for 399 Robux. The Casual server doesn't allow it.
  6. 6Spend your first Cash on a pose pack, not a dress. The cheapest standard pack on the wiki is the Pop Culture Pose Pack at 1,800 Cash. Poses are free to start with, but packs add variety on the runway.
  7. 7Check the Weekly Boutique before you buy anything. Four Cash items rotate in every Saturday at 11 AM Eastern, and the wiki's rotation history shows some pieces coming back in later weeks.

What to unlock first

You'll meet a lot of items. Our items catalog lists 1,218 clothing and accessory entries (the raw data has 1,225 rows, but seven of them are hairstyles that appear on the hairstyles page instead). By status:

StatusCountWhat it means
Core442Items in the Dressing Room by default: 273 free, 169 VIP
Locked681Items you earn or buy: Cash, Robux, codes, achievements, events
Removed95Items no longer obtainable

In total, 278 items are marked VIP, which includes 79 locked and 30 removed ones. The 95 removed items are the practical lesson: seasonal content leaves. If you see a limited seasonal set you love, check how long the season runs before you plan to buy it later. You can read more on the removed items guide and browse everything in the items database.

For gamepasses, buy in this order only if you decide to buy at all:

  • Increased Item Limit, 129 Robux. It raises the cap from 18 to 24 items, which matters most for layered outfits.
  • Run Faster, 149 Robux. Lets you set your walk speed anywhere from 0 to 100 percent.
  • Custom Makeup, 349 Robux. Classic Makeup is free; this pass lets you build looks from scratch, including lips and eyebrows.
  • VIP Pass, 799 Robux for permanent access. The wiki disagrees with itself on the monthly price (299 Robux on the VIP pages and the products list, 399 on the gamepass table), so check the in-game price before you pay.

The wiki also lists 2X Money (399 Robux) and Materials+ (299 Robux, with the description still marked "TBA"). Nothing in the game forces you to buy any of this. The free tools are enough to win rounds, which is the point of the VIP guide if you want to weigh it up.

Beginner mistakes the mechanics warn you about

  • Ignoring the exact wording of the theme. Monochrome asks for a single color. That's a rule, not a mood.
  • Leaving the salon for last. Hair, makeup and nails all sit in Lana's Salon, so schedule that visit while you still have time on the clock. (There's even a daily task that asks you to use Lana's nail station for 2 or 3 rounds.)
  • Hitting the item cap with clutter. Eighteen items go quickly once you add shoes, a bag, jewelry and hair accessories.
  • Looking for unlocked items on the shelves. Items you earned by code, achievement, Robux or Cash sit in the booths' Closet, not on the open racks.
  • Voting carelessly. The developers have changed the voting system more than once, including a fairer-voting trial on July 12, 2025; penalties for unfair voting now exist only in Master servers. Rate honestly.

A 2023 patch note said joining 20 seconds or less before voting kept players off the runway. That note is three years old and we couldn't confirm whether it still holds, so don't rely on it either way.

Where to go next

Once the loop feels natural, three guides cover the rest: how to win for the scoring logic, how to get money for the economy, and the Dress To Impress hub for items, sets and themes in one place. The current season, as the wiki lists it, is Halloween 2026 (started October 17, 2026) with the Part 2 quest update dated October 24, 2026; the Part 2 page still carried an "unreleased" tag when the wiki was read for this guide.

Key Takeaways

  • Every round has a theme: build the outfit in the dressing room before time runs out, then walk the runway.
  • Other players vote with stars; the best-rated finish on the podium and earn more.
  • Codes give clothes, not money: Cash is earned by playing rounds.
  • Seasonal and event items can leave the game: check how to get each one before the event ends.
