Campfire Upgrades
The campfire is the heart of your camp. It isn't decoration — it's the only reason the cold doesn't kill you, the dark doesn't blind you, and the creatures don't waltz in. Upgrading its tier is the single most important investment your squad will make each run.
There are 6 documented tiers. Each one stacks light radius, fuel efficiency and team bonuses (nearby hunger regen, fast-travel, faster cooking). If your squad is spreading out to farm far away, push light radius first; if you're starving, the hunger regen tiers are the priority.
- Tier 1
Starter fire. Keeps the cold at bay for a few hours but burns through wood fast.
- Tier 2
Bigger flame. Lights more of the camp and saves a bit of fuel per night.
- Tier 3
Stable bonfire. Cooking is faster and party members regen hunger when nearby.
- Tier 4
Roaring fire. Pushes enemies back further and lets you cook two meals at once.
- Tier 5
Bright pillar. Acts as a beacon — teammates can fast-travel back to camp from the map.
- Tier 6
Eternal flame. Highest tier. Doubles night-time visibility and reveals chest icons within a wider radius.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many campfire upgrade tiers are there in 99 Nights in the Forest?
There are 6 campfire upgrade tiers (Upgrade 1 through Upgrade 6). Each tier is a cumulative improvement — you must complete them in order. The campfire starts at its base state and every upgrade adds to light radius, fuel efficiency, and team utility bonuses. Reaching tier 6 is a late-game milestone for serious runs.
What is the most important campfire upgrade to prioritize?
This depends on your squad's biggest problem. If creatures are breaching your perimeter, push the light radius tiers first — a wider lit zone discourages enemy entry. If your team is always hungry, prioritize the hunger regeneration tier. If you're burning through fuel canisters, the fuel efficiency tier pays back quickly. Identify the bottleneck before spending resources.
Does the campfire upgrade affect the fast-travel system?
Yes — higher campfire tiers eventually unlock a fast-travel anchor at your campfire location, letting squad members teleport back to base rather than walking. This is particularly valuable in late-game when your team is farming far from camp. The Teleporter item crafted at the Crafting Bench works in conjunction with this system.
Can the campfire be destroyed by enemies?
The campfire itself acts as your base anchor and is not a standard destructible target in normal runs. However, creatures can raid your camp and damage nearby structures. Keeping Log Walls, Bear Traps, and defensive blueprints around your campfire perimeter is the standard protection strategy, especially past night 20.
Is it worth upgrading the campfire in a solo run?
Yes, arguably more so than in a group. In solo, you get no passive support from teammates, so the campfire's hunger regen and light radius have greater relative impact. The fuel efficiency tier is also crucial when you're managing all resource gathering alone. Aim to reach at least tier 3 before night 30 in a solo run.
