Mechanically it carries a named Caterpillar ability, and like other bug-family pets its passive tends toward crop interaction, typically nudging the size or value of plants it tends. Because the Bug Egg is a repeatable source rather than a one-time event, the Caterpillar is something you can actively farm for and even stockpile duplicates of to level efficiently.

Does it earn a serious slot? For most players, yes, at least through the mid game. A legendary passive obtained at a 40% rate gives you strong value per effort, and that accessibility is exactly what makes it a smart early backbone pet.
