Rare Items Cheat Sheet for 99 Nights in the Forest

Some items in 99 Nights only show up in specific chests, specific biomes, or through specific activities. If you have been searching for a particular weapon or crafting material and cannot find it, this cheat sheet has every source documented from the wiki.

Weapons

Morningstar

Damage: 70 | Swing: 1 second | Special: Explosion bar fills on hits → AoE detonation

Sources: Gold Chest only

The Morningstar is not guaranteed from every Gold Chest — it is one of several possible drops alongside the Strong Axe, Iron Body, and Giant Sack. Run multiple Gold Chests until you find one.

Obsidiron Hammer

Damage: 70 | Swing: 1 second | Special: Same explosion mechanic as Morningstar

Sources: Obsidiron Chest (craft via Meteor Anvil → Astrophysics badge chain)

This weapon matches the Morningstar but requires the Meteor event. The wiki says the Obsidiron Chest Blueprint is built at the Meteor Workshop for 10 Meteor Shards, 5 Gold Shards and 3 Obsidiron Ingots. Place the chest and open it for the Hammer or the Obsidiron Body. The Hammer has also been a reward in past Thanksgiving and Christmas events.

Tactical Shotgun

Starting ammo: 43 (3 loaded + 40 reserve)

Sources: Ruby Chests, plus a chance to appear as a crafting recipe at the Workshop

The Cultist Stronghold lists a Ruby Chest among its loot, and the Tactical Shotgun is one of its possible drops alongside the Kunai, Riot Shield, Thorn Body, Chainsaw and Gem of the Forest Fragment. Each opening gives one result, so expect to repeat the Stronghold.

Laser Sword

Damage: 25–232.539

Sources: Broken UFOs, Alien Mothership, Alien Chests

The Laser Sword only appears during alien invasion events. Broken UFOs crash-land and can be looted. The Alien Mothership drops Alien Chests containing the Laser Sword. You must trigger or wait for the late-game alien invasion.

Shortcut: Cyborg class (600D) starts with a Laser Cannon — not the Laser Sword, but comparable for alien events.

Laser Cannon

Damage: 70–87.5 (AoE) | Powered by alien tech energy, which can overheat

Sources: UFOs (drop), Alien Chests, Cyborg class starter

The most accessible source is the Cyborg class (600D), which gives it as a starting item. Otherwise, shoot down UFOs or clear the Alien Mothership event.

Trident

Damage: 37.5–62

Sources: Fishing (Bone Lake primarily) — very rare catch

The only weapon in the game obtained through fishing. The wiki calls it the rarest fishing item and says the chance is extremely low; it can also come from gold presents in the 2025 Christmas event. The Fisherman class speeds up hooking, but no drop rate is documented.

Kunai

Damage: 35 per throw

Sources: Ruby Chests; Assassin class (starter); chest spawn rate 5% at Class L1, 10% at Class L3

The Assassin class (500D) starts with 120 Throwing Knives and increases Kunai chest spawn rates. Outside of the Assassin class, you can find Kunai in Ruby Chests from the Cultist Stronghold.

Scythe

Damage: 60–78

Sources: Vampire Chest (Hedge Maze — Halloween event), Thanksgiving Table (seasonal)

The Scythe is seasonal — available during Halloween via the Hedge Maze event. Reach the end of the maze to find the Vampire Chest (Scythe + Vampire Cloak + Bouncing Blade). Outside of the event, not obtainable.

Crafting Materials

Gem of the Forest

Sources: Built from 4× Gem of the Forest Fragments. Fragments drop from:
- Cultist Stronghold (Stronghold run rewards)
- Ruby Chest
- Gold Chest
- Cultists post-Day 100

Uses: Required for Level 5 Crafting Bench recipes — Respawn Capsule, Weather Machine, Temporal Accelerometer, and more.

Priority: The Stronghold and Ruby Chests are the dependable sources. You need 4 Fragments to assemble one Gem of the Forest by dragging them into each other.

Cultist Gems

Sources: Three repeatable sources and several one-time ones; see the table below.

Uses: Required for advanced Crafting Bench Level 5 material costs.

Mammoth Tusk

Sources: Mammoth (800 HP, neutral; drops 8–9 Steak + 2 Ribs + Mammoth Tusk) and Hellephant (800 HP, hostile; same drops).

Uses: Big Game Hunter class (600D) at Level 3 can stack infinite Mammoth Tusk for permanent health bonuses.

Taming note: You can tame Mammoths with Pumpkin ×10 + Cake ×5 — but you still need to kill them for tusks.

Armor

Obsidiron Body

Sources: Obsidiron Chest only (same source as Obsidiron Hammer)

The best armor in the game. Comes paired with the Obsidiron Hammer in the same chest.

Alien Armor

Sources: Alien Chest only (Alien Mothership / UFO events)

Best armor for alien invasion events. Pairs naturally with the Laser Cannon or Laser Sword from the same Alien Chest.

Thorn Body

Sources: Ruby Chest (Cultist Stronghold)

Reflects damage back to attackers. Good for tanking Cultist swarms.

Iron Body

Sources: Gold Chest, Legendary Chest

The standard mid-game armor target. Available from chest runs around Days 10–20.

Rare Sacks

The Infernal Sack is special — it holds 20 items and automatically cooks raw meat stored inside it, but only in the Volcanic Biome. A great find for teams spending time in that area.

Cultist Gem Sources

The wiki counts eight ways to get a Cultist Gem, three of them repeatable.

The wiki names two best methods for bulk Gems: fishing the Algal Pond with a Strong Rod, or sacrificing 8 Cultists to the Volcano. Cultist Gems matter because the Oil Drill, Ammo Crate, Teleporter and Giant Bed recipes each ask for one.

Chest Contents That Hold Rare Items

Tablets and Where to Find Them

Tablets are dropped into the Crafting Bench to upgrade earlier blueprints. The wiki lists one source for each:

• Reviving the Giant Tree in the Fairy Biome
• Exploding the iron bars at the end of the Caverns
• Beating 5 waves in the Jungle Biome Fighting Pit
• Defeating the Cultist King in the Volcanic Biome
• Buying one from the Beekeeper for 360 Honey
• Finding one in the Ice Temple

More Rare Weapons and Gear

• Poison Claws: 30 damage with a 0.2 second swing, the fastest in the game. They come from the Jungle Chest, which only opens after all four skulls are placed, and are not a guaranteed drop.
• Ice Bow: fires three icicles, slows enemies and never needs ammo. Place 5 Feathers in the Snow Biome Owl's Nest three times, 15 in total.
• Honey Spear: 25-40 damage, sold by the Beekeeper for 100 Pollens.
• Frog Boots: a 3% fishing drop inside the Frog Cave, or from the Frog Chest after beating the Frog King.
• Infernal Sack: the 20 slot sack comes from Volcanic Chests, not from a Gold Chest.

Common Mistakes

• Expecting a specific item from a chest. Every chest is a random roll from its list, so plan for several openings.
• Mixing up the Astrogeology and Astrophysics badges. Astrogeology is crafting 5 items at the Meteor Anvil. Astrophysics is crafting, placing and opening the Obsidiron Chest.
• Spending Cultist Gems early. Four recipes ask for one each, so keep a few.
