Quick Summary

The Deer cannot be killed โ€” but it can be avoided, slowed, and survived. Here is everything you need to know about the game's scariest entity.

How to Survive The Deer โ€“ 99 Nights in the Forest

The Deer entity
The Deer entity

The Deer is the main antagonist of 99 Nights in the Forest. It stalks the forest at night, and unlike every other enemy in the game, it cannot be killed by any weapon. Every sword, rifle, Laser Cannon, and Tactical Shotgun does zero damage to it. Your goal is not to fight The Deer โ€” it is to survive despite it.

Walkspeed 35 is faster than a default sprint. Without movement buffs you cannot outrun The Deer in a straight line. This is why positioning, campfire management, and flashlights are so important.

The Single Most Important Rule: Keep Your Campfire Burning

The Deer will not enter the campfire's safe zone as long as the fire is burning. This is the central mechanic of the entire game. Every log you chop, every Fuel Canister you collect, and every campfire upgrade you make is ultimately about maintaining this safe zone.

The fire goes out if you do not fuel it. Before every night transition:

  1. 1Walk to the campfire and check the fuel level.
  2. 2Add logs generously โ€” never leave with one or two logs remaining.
  3. 3If you have Fuel Canisters or Oil Barrels, add those too.
  4. 4Make sure at least one player stays near camp at night if possible.

If the fire goes out at night while you are in the forest, sprint toward the Cultist Stronghold โ€” it is also a safe zone where The Deer cannot attack.

Using Flashlights

The Deer can be briefly stunned by shining a flashlight directly at it. This gives you a 1โ€“2 second window to change direction and sprint away. The stun does not last long and does not slow The Deer permanently.

Flashlight tiers:
- Old Flashlight โ€” found in Common Chests and Watchtowers (5 guaranteed per Watchtower). Short stun duration.
- Strong Flashlight โ€” found in Iron and Gold Chests. Longer stun, wider beam.

Always carry a flashlight at night. Having one equipped and ready is the difference between escaping and taking 25 damage and getting chased back to camp with low HP.

The Deer and the Missing Children

The lore of the game reveals that The Deer has kidnapped four children from the camp:

  • Dino Kid
  • Kraken Kid
  • Squid Kid
  • Koala Kid

Each child is hidden in a specific location in the forest. Rescuing one and bringing them back to camp adds +1 to your day counter. Rescuing all four earns the Orienteering badge (2.5 stars, 4 Diamonds) and gives each child their own tent at the campfire.

Note: there is also a Self Preservation badge (3 stars, 4 Diamonds) for surviving 99 days without rescuing any children. The Deer's association with the missing children is purely lore โ€” it does not change its behavior based on whether you rescue them.

Night Patterns and When The Deer Appears

The Deer becomes active at night. During the day it does not pursue players. Nights last long enough that making full loot runs is difficult โ€” plan your routes so you are heading back to camp before the sun starts setting.

Key behaviors to know:
- The Deer tracks players by proximity โ€” if you are far from camp in the forest at night, it will path toward you.
- The Deer avoids lit campfires โ€” it will walk around the edge of the safe zone but not enter.
- The Deer can follow you into buildings โ€” the Cultist Stronghold is the only guaranteed safe building other than camp.
- Nightcrawler Level 3 reduces the chance of The Deer spawning on your position at night, making it the only class with any Deer mitigation.

Campfire Flame Effects

Campfire Flames (obtained from Supply Crates via Daily Quests) can be placed on the campfire for passive effects. You can have up to 3 active per session:

  • Blue Hot Flame โ€” reduces the effect of weather (rain, cold) on players near the campfire.
  • Alien Flame โ€” triggers an alien invasion on Day 3.
  • Frog Flame โ€” triggers a frog invasion on Day 3.
  • Meteor Flame โ€” causes a meteor shower on Night 3.

None of these flames affect The Deer directly, but the Blue Hot Flame can help keep players at camp longer at night by reducing weather penalties.

The Caverns Strategy

The Caverns (added November 2025) contain four statue sections dedicated to The Deer, The Owl, The Ram, and The Bat. The Bat entity lives inside the Caverns (35 damage, unkillable) โ€” so the Caverns are not a safe hideout from The Deer.

However, completing Blessings in the Caverns earns you the Blessings I and Blessings II badges and potentially bonus loot. Avoid the Caverns at night unless your team is experienced.

Hard Mode: Even Harder to Survive

In Hard Mode, enemies are more aggressive and resources are scarcer. The Deer behaves the same mechanically, but without the standard chest spawns it is much harder to stock enough logs for campfire fuel. Surviving 99 days in Hard Mode earns the hardest badge in the game (5 stars, 10 Diamonds โ€” symbol: โ˜ฃ๏ธ๐ญยงโˆžโ˜ ๏ธฮฉ@).

Summary: Deer Survival Checklist

  • Always fuel the campfire before nightfall
  • Carry an Old or Strong Flashlight at night
  • Use the flashlight beam to stun The Deer and change direction
  • Sprint toward Cultist Stronghold if caught away from camp at night
  • Consider Nightcrawler class (200D) to reduce Deer spawn frequency
  • Do not try to fight The Deer โ€” no weapon in the game can damage it
