Research Outpost

The Research Outpost is a unique Structure added in the 25 January 2026 update, and it matters far more for what it enables than for any loot it holds. It is a large building positioned just outside the starting area, making it one of the most accessible landmarks of any run, you can reach it early without a long, dangerous trek across the map.

Its defining feature lives downstairs: the outpost contains a basement where players can vote to activate Hard Mode. That turns this location into a deliberate difficulty switch rather than a scavenging stop. Visiting is worthwhile when your group is confident and wants the steeper challenge and the rewards that come with surviving it, but it is not something to trigger casually.

The real risk here is the decision itself. Because Hard Mode is enabled by a group vote, a single eager teammate can push the lobby into a much harsher run before everyone is geared and coordinated. Treat the basement with caution: agree as a team before anyone casts a vote, make sure your base, weapons, and Fuel are ready for tougher nights, and only commit to Hard Mode when you genuinely want it.
