Gem of the Forest — In-Depth Analysis
The Gem of the Forest is a pure crafting material with no hunger or combat value, so don't expect it to keep you alive directly. Its entire purpose is unlocking the Crafting Bench Level 5, the top tier of your workbench progression, which gates the strongest recipes in the game.
Getting one is genuinely an endgame chore. You assemble a full Gem by dragging four Gem of the Forest Fragments into each other, and those fragments only start dropping after day 100 from Cultists during nighttime raids. The richest source is clearing the Cultist Stronghold, which dumps a pile of rewards including fragments, and the Ruby Chest can hand you one as a bonus drop.
Is it worth grabbing? Absolutely, but only if you have already survived deep into a run. Casual or short sessions will never see it, and there's no shortcut since it can't be bought or found early. Treat the Gem as a victory-lap material: prioritize the fragments whenever you raid a Stronghold, hoard them in a safe stash, and combine them the moment you have four so your bench upgrade isn't blocked when you finally want those late-game crafts.
