Hotel Room Key

The Hotel Room Key is a pale-gold key with a darker gold outline around its head, hanging from a keychain with a black label that shows the room number in white. The inventory icon displays 0027 by default. The tag matters: on normal floors the number on the label matches the door the key opens, and a key opens only its own door. Once that door is unlocked, the key vanishes from the room and from the inventory of anyone holding it.

Where keys appear

A key spawns somewhere inside the room that is locked, on top of or inside containers, on beds, sofas, chairs, crates or the floor. Guiding Light makes a shiny sound near it and, after a while, highlights it with blue particles. In The Reception the key is always on the wall behind the counter, labeled 0001, the only fixed spawn in the game.

Dupe and other quirks

Since The Modifiers update, if Dupe is in the room the key label can be scrambled over time, as can the door number. Since The Mines, a key can be used while the other hand holds an item. Timothy can hide in drawers that hold room keys.
