Screech

Screech is only 60 cm tall, yet it is the most frequent entity in The Mines. It is a small pale-pink creature coated in glossy black slime, with six tentacles, glowing white eyes and a smile full of human-looking teeth. Its bite deals 40 damage.

How an encounter goes

In The Hotel it can spawn in dark rooms, including rooms darkened by Rush. In The Mines it can spawn in almost any room, starting as early as Door 101, but never in Seek chases, Halt's hallway, The Adit, The Dam or The Woods. It appears directly behind you. First comes a quiet static sound and a slight screen shake, then a whispered "psst". Look straight at it before it bites and it screams and despawns.

Counterplay

Check the ceiling, eye level and the floor first, and move in a straight line or at a right angle so you know where behind you is. Light sources lower its spawn chance but never stop it. Hiding or climbing a ladder despawns it. A Crucifix banishes it only if you have not looked at it. Screech is client-sided, so ping does not matter and other players cannot see it. The "psst" can also play as a fake outside dark rooms, only quieter. While Screech follows you, Eyes and Lookman cannot hurt you.
