Bread

Bread and Cheese heal the same 45 HP with the same sound, so the question is not which is better but where each one lives. Bread has the wider range: in The Mines you only get it from Louie, and since the Great Outdoors update of August 10, 2025 it can also appear, rarely, in the vine-covered chests of The Outdoors.

It is a single slice of wholemeal bread with a dent in the middle. It was first revealed in The Content Update trailer and introduced on December 20, 2024. Eating it replenishes 45 HP at once, and you can hold several, although they do not stack.

Feed the Caws

What Cheese cannot do is this: bread can be fed to the Caws in The Outdoors. That unlocks the "Feed the Birds" achievement and improves your chances of getting Lotus Petals. Because bread is so hard to find there, the wiki calls the achievement rare.

Louie

Before The Great Outdoors Update, handing Louie a Cheese guaranteed Bread back. A Glowstick, Candle, Lighter or Tip Jar gave 50%, and a Crucifix 33.33%. You can also pay Louie with an item, or crucify him, to receive it.
