Midnight Axolotl

“The Midnight Axolotl is a variant of Axolotl that has adapted to the Desolate Deep. Midnight Axolotls are known for their adorable looks and giant size compared to regular Axolotls. They are most commonly seen at night while other fish sleep. It has been theorized that the glowing gills on the sides of their head have evolved, allowing them to use echolocation to see predators in even the darkest waters. Despite being on the lower end of the food chain, they use their agility and ability to hide within the Desolate Deep. It is currently unknown how many Midnight Axolotls are residing there”— in-game Bestiary description

Midnight Axolotl guide

Desolate Deep gives you Midnight Axolotl if you bring Insect bait and fish at night in Spring or Autumn. The listing describes it as a variant of the Axolotl adapted to the Desolate Deep, with glowing gills that may help it see in the dark.

It is a Legendary catch of 60 to 396.2 kg, averaging 115 kg, and its maximum weight ranks 206 of 663. At C$8 per kg it averages C$920, rank 333 of 742 documented fish, so by price it sits in the middle of the pack, not at the top. Its 300 base XP is modest for the tier.

Barbed Shark shares the rarity and the zone. The Desolate Deep sells two rods, the Reinforced Rod and the Trident Rod, so you can equip yourself on the spot.

Verdict: a decent Legendary for a player who already fishes the Desolate Deep at night and has Insect bait to spare, but not a fish to plan a trip around. Its value comes from being a reliable Legendary catch in a zone where you may be after something rarer. If you need cash, sell the big ones; the price per kg is low, so only heavy specimens are worth much.
