Description

Dark Step is a kick-based fighting style taught by the Dark Step Teacher in Pirate Village, making it one of the earliest melee options available to new players. Unlike Devil Fruit abilities, fighting styles like Dark Step scale entirely with the Melee stat and build mastery by landing their skills in combat. The style's moveset centers on fast, aggressive footwork: Power Kicks and Flying Kick apply direct pressure, Breakdance adds a spinning multi-hit flurry, Barrage unleashes a rapid volley of strikes, and Overheat closes out the kit with a heavy finishing blow. Equip one style at a time and grind its mastery to unlock each move in sequence. While higher-tier styles such as Godhuman and Sanguine Art dominate late-game PvP and grinding, Dark Step serves as a solid foundation for understanding melee combat flow before you invest in advanced options.

Moves & Abilities

5 moves
M1
Power Kicks

The user swings their legs at the opponent, swinging three times and stopping at the fourth, dealing damage at a low range.

Z
Flying Kick
Mastery 1

The user launches towards their cursor, leaving an impact. * This move launches the user in an arc, with a red line showing the user where they will land (can be inaccurate if used from a long distance). If used when Overheat is active it deals extra damage and does AoE damage upon impact.

X
Breakdance
Mastery 40

The user handstands, starts spinning, attacks everything around them using their legs. Upon contact with an enemy, the user will deal damage and stun the enemy for the duration of the move. The user is unable to move during this. If used during Overheat, it deals extra damage and ignites the wind around the user.

C
Barrage
Mastery 80

The user releases a barrage of kicks towards their cursor. The duration of this move will be increased if the key is held down. If the user is hit during this move, the move is canceled. If used during Overheat, it deals extra damage and the barrage will be on fire.

V
Overheat
Mastery 150

The user spins really fast and sets both of their legs on fire, increasing Dark Step's damage by ~22% for 60 seconds. * Overheat also deals damage after the leg lights on fire, but it's best not to use it for doing damage since it does the same amount of damage as a singular M1 click.

Trivia

10
  1. 1

Dark Step is considered to be the best fighting style for grinding aura mastery.

  2. 2

If the user uses [V] Overheat and goes into Light's [F] Light Flight, the flames will get all messed up.

  3. 3

If [V] Overheat is used over 100 times, the user will have both legs on fire upon using it again, similar to Death Step's [V] move which doesn't have a requirement for both legs to be on fire and has it from the start upon use.

  4. 4

If the user uses [V] Overheat, and then switches to another fighting style, the user's legs will still be on fire without an expiration timer. Hence, it is possible to get both flame legs and flame fists by activating the move and equipping Dragon Talon. This effect only gets removed if the player dies or rejoins. This is purely cosmetic. The expiration timer is however restored if using the [V] move again.

  5. 5

The damage multiplier is only applied while using Dark Step or Death Step's moves, so the user cannot use this to get extra damage on other moves.

  6. 6

If the player has Dark Step or Death Step equipped, their Aura stages will start at their legs, instead of their hands.

  7. 7

[C] Barrage is similar to Rubber's [C] Rush.

  8. 8

If the user uses [C] Barrage and quickly switch fighting styles while holding it, they will be stuck in the animation.

  9. 9

Dark Step is the one of the only two fighting styles to have four moves, the other being its successor, Death Step.

  10. 10

In Update 9, Dark Step was almost renamed to Fire Feet.

Dark Step — In-Depth Analysis

## What Is Dark Step?

Dark Step is an early-game fighting style available across all three seas and one of the first upgrades a First Sea player can access. Rooted in a swift, kick-heavy martial art, it introduces players to the idea that fighting styles can have elemental properties and real combo utility beyond basic M1 punches. It's purchased from the Dark Step Teacher at Pirate Village for 150,000 Beli — an affordable ask even for mid-First Sea players.

## Role and Who It's For

Dark Step occupies the role of a reliable all-rounder in the First and early Second Sea. Its cost sits low enough that almost any active grinder can unlock it without a painful farming session, and its availability in all three seas means it never becomes inaccessible after a reset. That said, it's firmly a stepping stone: the meta styles of the Third Sea far outclass it in PvP burst and grinding efficiency.

- Strengths: Low Beli cost (150,000), no fragment requirement, accessible in every sea - Weaknesses: Outclassed by Second and Third Sea alternatives; limited late-game PvP viability

Tip: If you're progressing through the First Sea and want a fighting style that bridges you toward Superhuman or Electric Claw later, Dark Step is the best value-per-Beli option at this stage — bank it early and save your fragments for the upgrades ahead.
