Phoeyu, the Reformed — Ice Castle
Costs & Requirements
Description
Tucked inside the Ice Castle, Phoeyu the Reformed teaches Death Step to players who meet his mastery requirement — making it one of the few fighting styles tied to a specific region and NPC backstory. It builds on the foundation of Electric Claw but strips away the lightning aesthetic, replacing it with a colder, more brutal martial discipline focused on heavy-impact strikes. The moveset reflects that philosophy: Heavy Kicks and Rocket Kick deliver raw physical punishment, Wind Bullet extends your threat range with a projectile, and Vermillion Drill adds a spiraling close-range burst. Maximum Overheat serves as the signature finisher, channeling accumulated force into a single overwhelming blow. Death Step scales entirely with the Melee stat and requires no Devil Fruit, making it accessible to any build. While later options like Godhuman or Sanguine Art tend to dominate high-end PvP, Death Step remains a solid mid-game stepping stone with satisfying, hard-hitting animations.
Moves & Abilities
5 movesThe user uses their feet to deliver four hard kicks to the enemy. The damage can be amplified with .
The user enters a stance and a whirlwind-like effect appears around the user. After releasing the move, the user dashes forward at high speed in the direction of the cursor, kicking back anyone in their way. If the user or the hit enemy makes contact with a surface, it will create an Area of Effect
The user pulls their left leg back and, upon releasing the move, kicks the air, creating a very fast wind bullet, which explodes into an Area of Effect
The user releases a barrage of kicks in a drill-like fashion towards their cursor, stunning anyone caught in the attack, and ends with a powerful downward axe kick if an enemy is caught in the barrage. The duration of this move will be increased if the key is held down. This move can be held for 3 seconds. If the user is on the ground, they will jump up upon starting this move. With Maximum Overheat: The user barrages their opponent with flaming kicks, and the final axe kick lights the ground on fire, dealing extra burn damage.
The user sets their legs on fire and creates a small explosion around their legs, damaging anyone near them. While active, this move increases Death Step's damage by ~15% for around 60 seconds. Additionally, all Death Step attacks leave fire on the ground that deals tick damage to enemies inside of it, lasting for 4 seconds. This move has a cooldown of 90 seconds.
Trivia
10- 1
Death Step and its inferior version Dark Step are the only current fighting styles in the whole game that have a transformation-type move that enhances damage, as well as the only ones that have four moves.
- 2
There is a bug where if [V] Maximum Overheat is active while switching fighting styles, the visual effect on the user's feet will stay until the user dies or leaves the game. This also applies to Dark Step. Keep in mind that this is purely visual effect, and does not provide any buffs.
- 3
When using [Z] Rocket Kick on the edges of the volcano at the Magma Village, the crater created will be purple, similar to T-Rex's [F] move.
- 4
The [V] ability Maximum Overheat has the highest mastery required for a move in the whole game, being 400 mastery, with other [V] moves usually having mastery requirements of 150, 225, 250, 300, 350 mastery. However, Maximum Overheat before Update 14 used to have a mastery requirement of 450.
- 5
Before Update 14, Death Step's [V] was one of the most tedious things to get in the game, with things like Godhuman, Sanguine Art, Race Awakenings and others, did not exist at the time, so getting this move was one of the most tedious things to do at the time, similar to getting max level, 30m Bounty/Honor, getting 600 mastery on something, owning the most expensive fruits, and others. But when Update 14 rolled around, the mastery requirement went from 450 to 400.
- 6
Death Step, along with Dark Step, are the only fighting styles that have [V] abilities.
- 7
Death Step's [V] move used to be called Devil Flames.
- 8
Death Step was reworked.
- 9
Fire effects were greatly improved.
- 10
[V] Devil Flames was renamed to .

Death Step — In-Depth Analysis
## What Is Death Step?
Death Step is the powered-up evolution of Dark Step and one of the first serious fighting style investments a player will make upon arriving in the Second Sea. Purchased from Phoeyu, the Reformed at the Ice Castle, it costs 2,500,000 Beli and 5,000 fragments — a meaningful barrier that signals this is no longer beginner territory. You also need 400 mastery on Dark Step before Phoeyu will teach you, making it a genuine progression gate.
## Role and Competitive Standing
Death Step brings noticeably sharper damage and more aggressive kick-based combos compared to its predecessor. In the Second Sea meta it holds its own as a mid-tier competitive option, particularly for players who enjoy the fast, footwork-driven playstyle. By the time you're working through Third Sea content, more specialized styles start pulling ahead, but Death Step remains a viable bridge.
- Strengths: Available in both Sea 2 and Sea 3; strong close-range burst; upgrade path is clear (Dark Step → Death Step) - Weaknesses: Requires 5,000 fragments on top of a large Beli cost; hard-to-obtain mastery gate; outclassed in late Third Sea PvP
Tip: If you're farming fragments for Death Step at the Ice Castle, coordinate your mastery grind for Dark Step at the same time — the two goals overlap neatly and avoid a second dedicated farming trip later.
